At a time marked by geopolitical unrest, unstable supply chains and changing requirements, the construction industry is facing a new reality in which decisions must be made on a more uncertain basis. But uncertainty must not become a barrier to the green transition. Instead, it should serve as a starting point for action and new solutions. This is the premise when Building Green CPH opens its doors on 28 and 29 October in Copenhagen under this year’s theme: “Navigating Uncertainty – Hope Through Action”.
The construction industry is closely connected to global developments, and uncertainty is increasingly affecting both day-to-day practice and strategic decision-making. At the same time, the need to maintain momentum in the green transition has never been greater. With this year’s theme, Building Green aims both to acknowledge the reality facing the industry and to highlight how uncertainty can be used constructively in the transition already under way.
Although the world is becoming more unpredictable, these developments also present new opportunities. Stricter climate requirements can accelerate the development of low-emission materials, global instability can increase the focus on local resources and circular solutions, and competition for land can help strengthen work on biodiversity and regenerative urban development.
The theme therefore focuses on how the industry can take action and make new choices in a more uncertain reality:
- Our research clearly shows that the global situation and uncertainty are weighing heavily on the industry right now, both in the small decisions made every day and in major strategic choices. With this year’s theme, we therefore want to focus on how the industry can navigate this uncertainty and make better – and different – choices that can act as a catalyst for continued progress in the green transition. This includes rethinking how we use the resources and buildings we already have, so the industry can stand stronger in a changing world, says Anders Nielsen, Programme Manager for Building Green CPH.
Every year, Building Green CPH brings together around 10,000 professionals from across the construction industry. At a time of increasing complexity, shared conversations across the sector are becoming even more important. This view is shared by several industry voices, who also point to the need for new ways of navigating complexity.
- Complexity is growing faster than our ability to navigate it, and far too many solutions are still shaped by yesterday’s logic. But the future has not yet been decided. Uncertainty also holds openness – and therefore hope for a regenerative future. The industry already has many of the answers; the challenge is to integrate them systemically and stop the practices we know are not viable, says Flemming Rafn, Founder of Rafn.Studio, who will also speak at Building Green CPH in October.
Strong international focus and programme
With this year’s theme, “Navigating Uncertainty – Hope Through Action”, the Nordic region’s largest event on sustainability in construction will focus on how the industry can concretely navigate a more complex reality. Last year, the event strengthened its international focus, with 25% of the programme delivered in English. This year, the ambitions are at least as high across the five stages, where stakeholders from across the value chain will discuss responsibility, risk and new ways of collaborating, among other topics.
According to Building Green, the industry must stand together to navigate uncertainty and create progress. This requires global knowledge and shared solutions.
